Advocacy for federalism in Kenya emerged amidst World War II and its aftermath. The rapidly changing political, economic, and social environment in Great Britain and British colonies in Africa formed the background for uncertainty and concern for the future among Kenya’s European settler minority. Federalism’s appeal came forth among a portion of the European community and some of the colonial rulers who were concerned about a post-war world that seemed certain to bring far reaching changes in Britain’s most important East African dependency. Dr. Hal Gorby's contributing research for the PBS documentary "Mine Wars" helped the film earn a News and Documentary Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Research. Although the film did not win at the award's ceremony earlier this month, Dr. Gorby was recognized for his research in the nomination forms.

A group of faculty and students from the History Department at WVU attended the annual North American Labor History Conference (NALHC) in Detroit, MI. An international conference, NALHC has been an avenue for discussion in the field of Labor History for 39 years.
This year Dr. Michele Stephens had the opportunity to travel with students in the
Andes region for two study abroad experiences. As a faculty sponsor for study
abroad trips in Bolvia and Peru, she visited both countries to support the
students and see their experiences for herself.
Dr. Katherine Aaslestad, received a prestigious
J. William Fulbright Research Award to Germany. Dr. Aaslestad’s Fulbright Flex
Award will support three research trips to Germany in 2016, 2017 and 2018 to
undertake research on her book project, “After the Wars: German Central
Europe after Napoleonic Conquest, 1815-1848.”
In an
effort to engage students with the past, Dr. Arthurs has been actively
developing courses that take a thematic approach to history. He believes that
courses should allow students to think about history in a broader sense.
