Prospective Students
The graduate history program at WVU includes about 60 students and 20 faculty. Most students concentrate in U.S. history or Appalachian history, but students may choose to work in other areas supported by the faculty, especially European and African history. There is a special MA program in Public History.
Admission Requirements:
_Master of Arts_. Applicants should have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in history (a minimum GPA of 3.00 in history courses is expected). Submit the information listed above for the Application Process.
_Doctoral of Philosophy_. Applicants should have the equivalent of a MA in History, with a minimum GPA of 3.00 in graduate work. Submit the information listed above for the Application Process.

Statement of Purpose – should indicate your goals as a history graduate student and the area in history in which you expect to concentrate.
Writing Sample – should be an essay, thesis, or term paper you have done for a history class.
Three letters of Recommendation – should be by people who are in a position to evaluate your academic strengths.
